The team at Performing Arts at STCM work tirelessly to promote the arts and increase opportunities for our students.. We are fortunate to have volunteers and staff from all walks of life who bring their unique expertise and resources into everything we do. This is what enables us to achieve our goals year after year.

Mr. J. Waterworth

Curriculum Leader:

Performing Arts and Music Specialist

I graduated from Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in 1998 with a Bmus(hons) in Operatic Recital.

I then went on to study Musical Theatre at the Royal Academy of Music gaining a PgDip(perf) and the Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music teaching qualification in Musical Theatre.

Before going into teaching, I worked professionally as a musician and actor, working with Chris De Burgh and  Sarah Brightman as a backing singer on their UK tours. I also performed at the Diana, Princess of Wales

Tribute Concert at Althorpe House.

I have also worked extensively with the Black Mountain Male Voice Chorus of Wales as a soloist, touring the USA and Hong Kong as well as working with touring theatre companies; taking part in the Almeida Opera Festival, the Battersea Arts Festival and Theatre in Education Projects with Seagull Theatre of the Gorge based in Ironbridge, Shropshire.

I completed my PGCE (secondary music) at University of Plymouth, in 2002, and from there, was Head of Performing Arts at a school in North Yorkshire, then Teacher in charge of Drama at Brixham College before becoming Director of Music at Dawlish College and then Head of Perfomring Arts. The year before joining St Cuthbert Mayne School, I was Head of Music at Teignmouth Community School  and Dawlish College, dividing my time between the both, I still work semi-professionally as a soloist in the local area.

Drama and Dance Specialist

 

I studied dance from the age of 3 and performed in numerous productions and competitions the highlight being the All England Dance festival before enrolling at London College of Dance and graduating from their degree programme in 2000.  Following that I was accepted at the Laban Centre London on a post graduate scholarship where I spent a year developing my technique and choreographic skills.  I worked alongside many highly acclaimed professionals and supported the Laban outreach programme in my spare time.  After this I worked for DAISI part of devon arts as an educational artist working in primary and secondary schools as well as teaching for the Alison Axford Theatre school in Paignton.  I also worked as part of the cabaret team at the Templestowe hotel.  Following this I embarked on a PGCE and trained to become a Secondary Performing Arts teacher (specialising in Dance and Drama).  My first teaching job was in a Performing Arts school in Southampton, then I moved back to Devon and taught at Tavistock College before moving closer to home to work at South Dartmoor Community College where I taught for 14 years.  In 2022, I came to Cuthbert Mayne and have loved sharing my passion for the Performing Arts.  In addition to teaching I have also worked as a lecturer and assessor for the Exeter University PGCE  teacher training programme and have also performed professionally for a contemporary dance company which toured in England and Germany

Drama and Dance Specialist

 

After training in drama, musical theatre and various dance styles throughout childhood, I completed a BA Hons degree at the University of Roehampton in London. Whilst studying, I performed with the dance company, Third Row. I then completed my teacher training in Secondary Drama and Dance at the University of Exeter.

I have performed at various large UK venues (O2 London, NIA Birmingham, Emirates Arena Glasgow) as part of the British Basketball League Dancers and continue my love of Musical Theatre by performing, directing and choreographing with Exmouth Musical Theatre Company.
